All Aboard Florida hires Archer Western for passenger rail work

Archer Western workers, seen here at SunRail in Orlando, were hired by All Aboard Florida for its South Florida rail project.

All Aboard Florida hired Archer Western to provide the construction crews to upgrade its 66-mile rail corridor between Miami and West Palm Beach as part of the $2.5 billion project.

The company, a subsidiary of Florida East Coast Industries, is preparing to launch a high-speed rail passenger service between Miami, Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach by early 2017, with an Orlando stop to follow later. More than 100 workers overseen by Archer Western will build safety improvements, track work, and better signalization. The job also includes 185 enhanced grade crossings and quiet zones in select locations.

“Modernizing the rail infrastructure is central to All Aboard Florida’s new rail operations and to our commitment to public safety,” All Aboard Florida President Mike Reininger said in a news release. “Archer Western is one of the top firms in the industry and brings to this project a depth of experience and history of results unparalleled in rail operations.”

Archer Western was ranked as the 12th-largest builder of rail and mass transit projects in the U.S. by Engineering News-Record. Its previous jobs include SunRail in Orlando.

All Aboard Florida is currently building the three South Florida stations.
