Broward Health to consider $56M expansion in Coral Springs

The governing board of Broward Health will consider a $56 million bed tower expansion at Broward Health Coral Springs.

The North Broward Hospital District commission, which oversees the public hospital system, will meet on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. and vote on whether to move the project forward. It has yet to craft a request for proposal to work with architects and developers, so it’s in the preliminary stages at this point.

That’s the same meeting where the commission will vote on hiring Dr. Nabil El Sanadi as the president and CEO of Broward Health. His proposed compensation package hasn’t been finalized, according to Broward Health officials.

Broward Health already has two major construction projects in the works, improvements to Broward Health Northand Chris Evert Children’s Hospital. This would make a third.

It could expand Broward Health Coral Springs from 196 beds to 250 beds. It would expand medical/surgical beds, make the post-birth rooms all private beds, relocate the neonatal intensive care unit, and upgrade the energy plant.

The staff memo to the commission says that the growing population, especially with more elderly residents, has created the need for more patient beds in northwest Broward. Parkland expects to have 5,000 homes built by 2022. It also wants to combat competition, as West Boca Medical Center is also adding private rooms to its maternity unit.

“Bed demand will continue to increase,” the staff memo states. “If BHCS fails to expand, a competitor will fill the need.”

Broward Health staff estimated it could recover the cost of investment in the expansion is just over 12 years.
