Illuminated Janet Echelman Sculpture Proposed For I-95 Bridge In Brickell

New artwork by sculptor Janet Echelman could soon be gracing the I-95 bridge in downtown Miami.

Developer Chetrit Group is proposing to install the artwork as part of $21 million worth of investment in public benefits in the Miami River Distict. Under the Miami 21 zoning code, developers who make a contribution to public benefits are permitted to build projects that are taller and more dense than would be normally allowed.

Echelman uses material such as fishnet to create her sculptures, which have been installed in cities including Amsterdam, Vancouver and Phoenix.

The Miami River Commission reviewed the plans at a meeting yesterday. Dade’s Department of Cultural Affairs (the same department that commissioned the infamous Home Run sculpture at Marlins Park) will also review the artwork.
