Memorial Regional Hospital leaders consider new garage to alleviate parking woes

Memorial Regional Hospital’s jam-packed parking lots could be alleviated by a new parking garage.

The South Broward Hospital District Board of Commissioners, which governs the public Memorial Healthcare System, will consider a request for a proposal (RFP) for the new garage at its meeting on Wednesday afternoon. According to the presentation, the garage would hold 1,081 spaces plus a 20,000-square-foot conference and meeting center.

The Hollywood-based facility would connect the 1,145-space visitor garage with the 1,756-space employee garage to form an “L” around the campus.

The cost of the project hasn’t been determined, as that would depend on how developers respond to the potential RFP. The presentation makes the case for why the garage is needed. Every day Memorial Regional Hospital has 2,612 visitors, 410 outpatient visits, 156 patient admissions, and 1,900 employee trips. Its valet service parks 1,667 cars a day.

In addition to its two current garages, the hospital has 275 spaces in on-site surface lots and 393 off-site spaces, which it leases for over $1 million per year. Its lots are regularly full.
