Prologis seeks approval to build Free Trade Zone at Port Everglades

Prologis wants to build a 250,000-square-foot Free Trade Zone warehouse at Port Everglades.

The Broward County Commission on Tuesday will vote on selecting Prologis to build a Free Trade Zone warehouse at Port Everglades.

The county issued a request for proposal in 2014 to build the 250,000-square-foot warehouse along with the loading docks on 16.65 acres. San Fransisco-based Prologis (NYSE: PLD) and Miami-based The Easton Group both responded, but county staff ranked the Prologis bid as superior.

If the county selects Prologis, that would lead to contract negotiations before the deal is finalized.

Port Everglades spokeswoman Ellen Kennedy said no county funds would be used for the project, which calls for the demolition of the existing free trade zone warehouse and the construction of a new one with higher ceilings across McIntosh Road. County staff would negotiate the financial terms of the lease agreement with the developer, she added.

Products in free trade zones can be manufactured or reexported without paying customers.
