EXCLUSIVE: South Florida’s first Wawa proposed in West Palm Beach

A site on the outskirts of Palm Beach International Airport could host the first Wawa convenience store and gas station in addition to a new hotel.

Car rental company Hertz Corp. (NYSE: HTZ) filed an application with West Palm Beach to rezone the vacant, 8.8-acre site at 1520 Belvedere Road. It acquired the property on the corner of South Australian Avenue for $2 million in 1999 but didn’t build anything there.

A rendering filed with the application shows a Wawa store taking up the 6,200 square feet of retail space. The Pennsylvania-based company announced in January that it was seeking locations for dozens of stores in South Florida. This is the first location that’s been made public.

The development application also calls for a 180,000-square-foot hotel.

Henry Hilsman, of Tampa-based Brightwork Real Estate, filed the application on behalf of Hertz. He couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.
